Biomechanics tries to explain, by means of applying the knowledge in several fileds of sciences (Physics, Engineering, Medicine,  Psychology, etc), how corporal damages may take place in human bodies during an accident.

Considering human and physical factors that may have been involved in an accident, like main forces direction and intensities released during a collision, resistance of the several tissues of human body and the protection offered by passive safety devices (safety belts, airbags, child safety seats, helmets in motorcyclists and cyclists, etc.) may lead to the occurrence of some kind of injures.

In many cases, it is possible to set, with a high level of certainty, the validity of an hypothesis related to how damages in people involved in an accident could take place.
